"There are times when I think that the ideal library is composed solely of reference books. They are like understanding friends--always ready to meet your mood, always ready to change the subject when you have had enough of this or that."

—Donald J. Adams (b. 1924) [Maxwell Smart] American actor

Summer Reading Program

2010 Summer Reading Program – Scare up a Good Book

Scare up a Good Book began at the Maryville Community Library Saturday, June 2nd and continued for six weeks. Opening day our performer was Serengeti Steve presenting The Reptile Experience. His experience with children, in addition to his outgoing personality, allowed him to make The Reptile Experience both an exciting and educational program. The following week of Summer Reading featured Frazzle the Clown for entertainment. Frazzle made balloon animals for every child in attendance. We averaged 55 children each week this year. That's a lot of balloon tying! Week three of the Summer Reading Program Mike “The Dulcimer Guy” Anderson performed. Mike plays a guitar, banjo, jaw harp, noseflute, bones, and more. His program combines music, storytelling, humor, and audience participation. His latest writing entitled The Great Sled Race and recording Anna’s Old Boot both won Parents’ Choice awards. Anna’s Old Boot also won a Children’s Music Web award for best children’s song 2003. Maryville Community Library featured Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST presented by Curtain's Up Theater Company for our fourth week of Summer Reading. This Disney classic tells the tale of an enchanted prince in the shape of a hideous beast and the intelligent woman who enters his life and must learn to love him if the curse is ever to be broken. This production was directed by Laura Barnard. At the end of June, Maryville Community Library brought Harvey the Juggler. Harvey performed tricks with the traditional balls, eggs, fruit, stuffed animals, clubs, plungers, rackets, basketball, frying pans, cigar boxes, axe, 22" knives {a sharp trick} and of course flaming torches. Amazing juggling skill and comical banter are Harvey’s specialties. For the final week of Summer Reading Chris McBrien thrilled the kids with comedy, magic, and ventriloquism. Chris brought with him Benny the Vulture, Sid the Shark, and Dewey the Duck. Thanks to all those children and parents who participated and assisted. We hope you enjoyed Scaring up a Good Book!
